Waves of Creativity

In line with this year’s Audi Fashion Festival, Samsung has unveiled its latest mobile phone, the Samsung Wave.

In an interesting twist in the world of collaborations, the Korean handphone mobile company has invited Singapore-based designers, Ben Wu and Desmond Yang, to create fashion items inspired by the Samsung Wave mobile phone.

I think mobile phones make up a very large part of the Singaporean identity. I’ve recently smashed my own and I was generally traumatised from the experience, not to mention the inconvenience I felt throughout the two days of my personal mobile malfunction incident. Shopping, as well, can be considered the nation’s favourite all-day activity.

Locally, collaborations between the two fields have been generally limited to launches or events, so I wanted to bring you through the design process of the creations which was born from this collaboration.

This statement necklace is created by Desmond Yang. On working with the Samsung Wave, he envisioned the flapping of wings. Working along the Chinese proverb, ‘there are no waves without wind’, he created these statement pieces in alignment with the movement of birds and the flapping of wings.

Ben Wu’s creation for Samsung highlights the design of the Samsung Wave itself, which has a diamond-shaped opening for its 5 megapixel camera lens. By connecting diamond-shaped pieces of various textures together, he created a hooded cape design.

The hood is an integral part of the design, as the urban user often gets lost in isolation while using his phone, whether at a dinner table full of people or in the crowded cityscape.

I thought these designs were interesting enough to highlight and share with you; I’ve been getting very interested in what goes on behind a creation and exploring the idea before the design takes shape. These are some examples of the thought process behind a creation, which should be of interest to you if you are a fashion student or a person interested in design.

These items will be made available for sale exclusively at the Samsung Flagship Store at VivoCity, BenWU boutique at Mandarin Gallery and abyzz by desmond yang boutiques at Orchard Central and Millenia Walk.
